The war between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing since 2022, has devastated numerous cities, and the Drama Theater in Mariupol has become one of its most symbolic sites. Once a cultural landmark and later a shelter for civilians, the building was destroyed in an airstrike. This project begins with a question of how architecture can address a building that has been destroyed and later rebuilt by the aggressor. What people seek to remember is not the theater’s previous appearance, but the event that occurred in this place. Rather than restoring a former image, the project aims to reinterpret the site as a space of documentation—one that preserves the factual remains of the attack and provides a framework for memory to persist
